The BU Chemical Writing Program (BUCWP), a collaboration between the Chemistry department and College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program, supports writing in the Chemistry Department’s two-semester sequence in Intensive General and Quantitative Analytical Chemistry. These courses enroll between 80 and 100 students per semester, and are intended for well-prepared students expecting to concentrate in chemistry.
In this presentation, we will discuss the program’s development from its inception in 2009 to its current incar-nation, addressing its pedagogy, structure, and administration. We will describe its increasing shift toward “just in time” support for student writing, as well as the institutional negotiations, curricular articulations, and admin-istrative arrangements that have allowed the program to deliver this support in a scalable way. We will con-clude by noting new challenges and opportunities that have arisen at our institution because of the program. This presentation should be of interest to writing faculty and faculty from all disciplines interested in supporting writing in disciplinary contexts. |
