Gallery Talk: Textiles for Buddhist Temples and Imperial Palaces
Start Date: 9/21/2017Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 9/21/2017End Time: 1:00 PM

Although the Chinese traditionally favored furnishings made of silk, weaving centers in northern and western China created knotted pile carpets made of wool and/or cotton. Join GW professor Cristin McKnight Sethi in the galleries as she discusses a pillar rug from The Textile Museum's collections that was woven in what is now China’s Hui Autonomous Region of Ningxia to cover a column in a Buddhist temple. Sethi discusses this work in the context of woven textiles used in sacred and secular architecture in China, Mongolia, and Tibet.

This program is part of the museum's weekly Textiles at Twelve series, which explores the textile arts and global cultures through films, lectures, gallery talks, and more. Free, no reservations required.
