The Absence of Hope: Underground Elements in "Get Out"
Start Date: 4/19/2018Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 4/19/2018End Time: 8:00 PM

The Absence of Hope, presented by Jared Sexton, is the GWU Annual Emancipation Day Lecture, co-sponsored by Africana Studies and the #Resist! Envisioning Justice Together lecture series. Jared Sexton is associate professor of African American studies and film and media studies at the University of California, Irvine.

This lecture will argue that Jordan Peele's "Get Out" (2017) is a global statement on the rudiments of modern society, working against the tendency to relegate history to the past and to reduce the history of racial slavery to a peculiarity of the United States. The film meditates, to that end, on the structural vulnerability produced by slavery and maintained by its post- emancipation afterlife, and it suggests that the path to freedom involves a gendered process of affirming loss without hope of recovery.
